Blogging from A to Z: April – 2016: E

Blogging from A to Z: April , 2016: E

The Blogging from A to Z challenge is to post everyday during the month of April 2016, except Sunday. I will start with the letter A and hopefully make it all  the way to Z. I hope you enjoy the read!

Come sit a spell with me and learn about the foods and memories of my Southern heritage, and enjoy a little Southern talk along the way… I grew up in the heart of Georgia, married a  Yankee in Connecticut and suddenly became displaced from my roots. But one thing is true – You can take the girl out of the South – But you can’t take the South out of the  girl! I’ve learned to eat differently over the years, but I’ve never given up the foods I grew up on. When I left Georgia, at the young age of nineteen, I knew how to cook nothing! I pretty much learned to cook by asking mama over the phone, how do you do make this, and how do you make that; thank heavens for my Southern mama! Even though mama doesn’t cook too much today, she still remembers the recipes and she’s been my go-to person every night in chatting about my Southern foods and many of her memories.

Southern Food and Memories

EWell shut the front door, my “E” Southern food “Deviled Eggs” is one that I didn’t even eat, but I did make! They were mama’s favorite – definitely not mine. Somehow I was voted the official Deviled Egg maker in my house, and I never ate them; only plain ones for me. I think I got railroaded on that deal – how do you make something you won’t even taste!! Yes I’m a Southern girl, but my all time dislikes are mayo, mustard, pickles and vinegar. And what goes in the Deviled Eggs – mayo, mustard and pickles!  Please give me warning if you’re one of those who lick the mayo off the spoon – it just ain’t right!

Mama’s Deviled Egg plate

I know a popular “E” food love today – Eggplant, but I never ate that in Georgia; sure do love it now though. I asked mama why we never ate eggplant…. “we ate what your grandfather’s grew, and it wasn’t eggplant! No one would have even known what to do with it and I don’t think I’d even try it today.” Although I told her that fried eggplant kinda tastes like a fried green tomato, that didn’t do anything for her – she quickly told me… “Well I don’t like them either.” There is nothing like a warm slice of fried eggplant, just out of the hot oil – sprinkled with fresh Parmesan…. OK.. I’m buying an eggplant tomorrow! I’ll have a dish waiting for you on Thursday when you arrive, just come on in and grab a plate…

I think it’s time to “shut my mouth” tonight!…. Nite Y’all….

We had deviled eggs growing up too and no eggplant. But I’m just the opposite of you. Love the eggs, allergic to the eggplant. Food tastes are so personal and individual. Makes the world go round.

  2. Hi Mary
Isn’t it funny how I could make the eggs and never taste them. Sorry to hear your allergic to eggplant as its so good. Thanks for stopping in

    I am loving your Mama!!
My mom had a similar deviled egg plate. I never liked deviled eggs as a child as there was too much filling. Then my mother-in-law showed me what she does – she just fills the eggs so there is a good ration of egg white to yolk mixture. The remaining yolk mixture she spreads on a piece of thin(ish) sliced deli ham and rolls it up. Then slices the rolls into 3-4 bite size pieces and places them among the deviled eggs (or a plate of their own) So good!! Now when having company or going to a pot luck I will sometimes make deviled eggs just so I can have the little ham rolls!

Oh goodness, deviled eggs were a staple at all our family gatherings and I still make them, without the mustard. My husband loves them. Deviled eggs and egg salad.
Eggplant? I’m with your mom on that one. I’m with her on fried green tomatoes, too.

My aunt is the official Deviled Egg maker in our family. I hate them – don’t even want to smell them. And sadly for my household, everyone likes them but me, so if they get a Deviled Egg, it’s because someone else made them. There have been no requests for eggplant, thank goodness.
