2021 B: Mama in Photos
I’m back for my sixth year (2021)… can you believe it… of participating in the yearly April A to Z challenge… and I’ve had quite a time in deciding on my “theme.” I had a few running through my head, but after losing my mother last November, I thought I’d honor her through the many photographs I have… and tell the story of the photograph… as every photo has a story.
B… Baby and Me with Mama
I’m fortunate that my mother had many photos of herself growing up… and I’m honoring her this year as the theme of my April A to Z… especially as was she was an April baby. Mama would have turned 91 this year… but she’s now back home celebrating this birthday with her parents and brother on the farm… where I believe she was always the happiest. The past few years my mother was fighting off dementia, while still managing to live alone until the last couple months of her life. I miss her every day… thinking and remembering all she did for me. She was the storyteller… She supplied me with my stories… and it’s because of her, that I write!
This is the youngest photo I have of mama as a baby… I’m guessing about 6-12 months of age. I love how my grandmother seemed to have dressed for the photo, complete with pearls… while granddaddy dressed in overalls… always his choice of clothes!
Mama with me as a baby/toddler. I have many photos of me as a baby, but not directly alone with my mother.
One of my favorite photos of mama and me… she was picture perfect here!
Mama with me as a young toddler while living in Union Point, Georgia. She’s beautiful here dressed in her pearls, earrings, bracelets, and even her nails are painted… she always dressed… and I bet she sewed that dress! The Ola Lilly next to mama came from her mother’s house… she planted one at every house she lived in… always at the back door. I Love seeing the clothes on the line… something you seldom see today. The lilly’s real name is Milk & Wine Lilly… but I’ve always called it the Ola Lilly after my grandmother. It’s actually considered an heirloom plant… passed down from generation to generation. I took bulbs to my house in Ct., but I had to bring them in every winter… eventually they seemed to stop blooming. This year before selling mama’s house, I dug up several and took to my son in Florida… can’t wait to see them bloom!
This photo was probably taken on the way to the “Bryan” family reunion up in the Blue Ridge mountains… just outside of Dahlonega, Georgia; sure wish they’d taken photos at the reunion. All she remembered was how they thought they’d never arrive… and when they did, they had to unlock a gate in order to drive through a pasture, deep into the woods. The house was way back and the porch was built over running water. The best thing mama remembered was… how good the fried chicken was that day! Wished mama took photos on the trip to the Smoky Mountains when she told me we saw a bear drinking a Coca Cola there.
Mama and me… look at me all barefoot in a somewhat fancy dress that mama made. As straight as my hair has been for years, never holding a curl… I find it funny seeing me with naturally curly hair. Mama was always dressed, she was never “not” dressed! Love that dress with the long sash hanging down… wish I had a full picture of it… I’m sure she sewed it! I’m thinking this photo was taken at Granddaddy Bryan’s house… they lived just one house away from us when we lived in Union Point, Georgia.
Mama and me… as a teenager. I have yet to remember where this photo was taken… I never seem to smile!
We seldom have taken photos together as I hate being in photos, and the camera is usually in my hands. I’m thinking my daughter grabbed my camera on this day and took this photo of us. No smile from me again, but at least I didn’t close my eyes…. point a camera at me and I freeze!
My previous years of A to Z Challenges are:
- 2016: A to Z Southern Foods and Memories… they said write what you know… and being a girl born in the South… well this was what I knew.
- 2017: A to Z Conversations with Mama… it was a somewhat easy one for me to write as I’d journaled our conversations for years… I researched favorite topics to write.
- 2018: A to Z All About Nancy Drew… this one has been my favorite topic so far, and I don’t know if I’ll ever come up with another one to equal it
- 2019: A to Z Italian Famiglia Foods and Memories… It’s time to finally write the memories of my husbands family foods.
- 2020: A to Z Family Stories… writing the stories of my husband’s family.
